Rooibos is a South African herbal drink made from the plant Aspalathus linearis, and it is naturally caffeine-free. It does not come from Camellia sinensis, the plant used for green and black tea, so its flavour and brewing method are closer to an herbal infusion.
What does rooibos taste like?
Plain rooibos often has woody, honey-like and lightly nutty notes. It is generally less astringent than black tea and pairs well with vanilla, mint, citrus, spices and flowers.
How to brew rooibos
- Bring fresh cold water to 100°C.
- Add about one teaspoon of loose rooibos per 180 mL of water.
- Steep for 3–6 minutes.
- Strain and taste. If the cup is too light, use more rooibos next time.
Rooibos tolerates hot water better than green tea. Blended products may contain herbs of different sizes, so follow the package instructions when they differ from this starting point.
What is in Moon Calm?
Moodvera Moon Calm (K59766) contains rooibos, sweet fennel, peppermint, chamomile blossoms, lemongrass, lemon balm, valerian root, cardamom seed pollen, sage and lavender blossoms. It contains no tea leaves and is labelled caffeine-free.
Can you drink Moon Calm during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Moon Calm contains chamomile and several other herbs. Canadian public-health guidance lists some herbal teas, including chamomile, among products to avoid during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication, have allergies, or have a medical condition, ask a qualified healthcare professional before drinking a multi-herb blend.
Frequently asked questions
Is rooibos the same as decaffeinated black tea?
No. Decaffeinated tea begins with tea leaves that naturally contain caffeine and then goes through a caffeine-removal process. Rooibos is naturally caffeine-free because it is a different plant.
Can you add milk to rooibos?
Yes. Plain and spiced rooibos can work well with milk. With a floral or mint blend, taste it first and add milk only if it suits the flavour.
Can rooibos be cold brewed?
It can, but brewing an herbal blend fully with hot water and then chilling it often gives more consistent extraction. Refrigerate promptly and drink it within a short period.
